Stone Setting

The walk up to Stone Setting rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb worthwhile. It's a proper moorland peak just inland from Lynton, the kind of place where you can see for miles across North Devon when the weather plays ball. The summit itself is marked by a stone cairn - nothing fancy, but it gives you something to aim for.

This is walker territory. The moorland terrain means you're looking at a good two to three hours round trip depending on your fitness and which route you take from Lynton. The paths aren't always obvious, so a map is essential rather than optional. You'll pass through heather and gorse with occasional dips into woodland, and the whole thing has that proper Exmoor feel to it without the crowds you'd get at some of the better-known peaks.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might struggle with the distance and boggy sections. Serious walkers doing a longer Exmoor loop will find it a natural stopping point. History buffs won't find much here - it's about landscape rather than heritage.
