Lynton and Barnstaple Railway

The railway line between Lynton and Barnstaple closed in 1935, but the narrow-gauge heritage railway that now runs on the preserved track brings that golden age back to life. You board vintage carriages pulled by steam locomotives that genuinely sound and smell like the real thing - not a simulator, actual coal and piston rods doing their work.

The route winds through North Devon countryside with genuine period charm. The journey takes about an hour each way, and you'll see why Victorians fell for this corner of the coast. Lynton itself sits perched on cliffs above Lynmouth, so the approach alone gets the heart racing.
