Sheaf Wood

The woodland floor at Sheaf Wood is soft with years of leaf litter, and the canopy overhead is thick enough that even on bright days you walk in dappled green light. It's a proper forest, not a managed park - the kind of place where you'll find fallen logs you could actually sit on and clearings that feel genuinely remote despite being just a few miles from Ashford.

Walking here is straightforward if you know where you're going. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but there's enough wilderness about it to feel like an adventure rather than a garden stroll. Kids will enjoy spotting wildlife and the freedom to explore a bit, though it's not the kind of place that holds their attention for hours on end - expect a solid 90 minutes before they start asking how much longer.

For anyone staying at one of the local glamping spots - Wood View Farm is barely four miles away, or Wildside and Wheatfields are close by - Sheaf Wood works as a cracking morning walk before settling in for the afternoon. Bring proper shoes if the ground's been wet. There's no café, no facilities, just trees and air. That's rather the point.

It's free to access and there's no fixed opening hours - you're dealing with a working woodland here, not a visitor attraction. Go in autumn when the light's golden and the place is quieter, or early spring when everything's pushing through the old growth. Midsummer can be a bit claustrophobic and buggy.
