The High Street in Tenterden is the sort of place that makes you understand why people move to the Kentish countryside and never leave. A proper tree-lined avenue of Georgian and Victorian buildings, it stretches for nearly half a mile with barely a chain store in sight - just independent shops, tea rooms, and the kind of small businesses that actually depend on people bothering to visit. The street itself is the attraction. You're walking on history here, though it doesn't feel stuffy about it.

On a good day you'll pop into a local bookshop, grab a coffee, maybe browse antique shops or deli counters. There's a working windmill visible at one end, which adds to the postcard feel without trying too hard. It's free to wander, obviously, and you'll need a couple of hours to do it properly - less if you're just passing through, more if you settle in for lunch somewhere.

Families get a kick out of it because there's actual stuff to look at rather than just walking through somewhere generic. Walkers heading through the Weald will find it a natural stopping point. History types appreciate the architecture without needing it explained in bronze plaques.

The real win is how it sits within reach of several top-notch glamping spots. Wood View Farm is just three miles out, Wildside Camping equally close, which means you can base yourself somewhere proper rural and still access a functioning market town with character. That's increasingly rare around here. Worth a detour from Ashford if you're in the area.
