Shave Wood

There's something oddly satisfying about a wood with a name like Shave Wood - you half expect it to be some deeply manicured sort of place, all neat edges and orderly paths. Reality's a bit different. This is proper woodland just outside Dover, the sort of place where you can actually disappear into the trees without feeling like you're on a theme park route. Kids won't be overwhelmed by scale or boredom - it's intimate enough to explore but not so small you'll lap it twice and call it a day.

The real pull is location. If you're based at Hawthorn Farm Holiday Park, just five-and-a-half miles away, this makes an easy half-morning excursion when the weather's decent. Pair it with something else in the Dover area rather than expecting it to anchor a full day out. Bring wellies if there's been rain - the paths can get boggy. Free to access, naturally, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so come prepared.
