Crabble Corn Mill

The old watermill on the River Dour just outside Dover is one of those places that catches you off guard. You're expecting a modest local museum, but Crabble Corn Mill turns out to be genuinely impressive - a working 18th-century mill with all its original machinery still intact, grinding away much as it did two centuries back. The building itself is handsome red brick, and stepping inside is like walking into an actual working factory rather than a preserved relic. You see the massive millstones, the wooden gears, the whole mechanical system that turned grain into flour. It's absorbing stuff, especially if you've got any interest in industrial heritage or how things actually worked before electricity.

History buffs and anyone keen on seeing authentic Victorian engineering will get hours out of it. Kids might manage twenty minutes before the novelty of watching stones grind wears thin, unless they're already hooked on old machinery. The riverside location itself is pleasant - worth a wander along the Dour valley either side of the mill.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Hawthorn Farm or the Parkdean site at St Margaret's Bay are closest - it makes for an easy afternoon detour from Dover town centre. Allow an hour comfortably, more if you want to read through the detail. Check ahead on opening times and admission before heading out, as smaller mills can have patchy hours. Worth the short drive from any of the holiday parks to break up a seaside week, though it's decidedly specialist rather than crowd-pleasing.
