Dover

The white cliffs loom like ancient sentinels over the Channel, but Dover's real charm lies beyond its famous chalk faces. This working port town pulses with ferry horns and seagull calls, where the English Channel meets history at every corner. The castle dominates the skyline - a proper Norman fortress that's weathered nearly a thousand years of invasions, wars, and curious tourists.

Down by the harbour, ferries churn towards Calais while fishing boats bob between the massive breakwaters. It's not pretty in the chocolate-box sense, but there's something honest about Dover's industrial grit mixed with its medieval bones. The town centre feels a bit worn around the edges, though the weekly market still draws a decent crowd.

Venture inland and you'll find surprising pockets of green. Long Wood and Stafflands Wood offer proper countryside walks just minutes from the port, while Abbey Lake provides a peaceful spot for an afternoon stroll. The East Kent Railway runs steam trains from nearby Shepherdswell - a lovely day out if you fancy a bit of nostalgia.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The M20 runs straight into town, and there are regular trains from London Victoria. Canterbury's just twenty minutes up the A2 if you need proper shops or restaurants.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to catch the first ferry to France, yet far enough from the port noise to sleep soundly.
