Shakespeare Park

Shakespeare Park is a proper nature reserve tucked away between Leicester and the Soar Valley - a decent spot if you're after some woodland walking without the tourist crowds. The place centres on a small lake, hemmed in by mature trees and bordered by meadow paths that take you through what feels like actual countryside despite being minutes from the city.

What you're getting is straightforward: a network of walking trails ranging from gentle loops around the water to longer rambles through the woodland. Birdwatchers genuinely rate it, especially during migration season when you'll spot warblers, tits, and the occasional nuthatch. The lake itself is calm and reflective - good for photos if you're into that sort of thing, and families with younger kids will manage the easier circuits without complaint, though there's not much to do once you've walked the loop. Older children might find it a bit samey after an hour.

Go in spring or early autumn when the light's better and you're not melting. The reserve is free to access, which is worth knowing - there's no entry fee lurking around the corner. Parking is available, though spaces can be tight on weekends.

It pairs sensibly with a stay at The Paddocks Caravan Park, only four miles south, giving you somewhere low-key to stretch your legs between park activities. On its own, though, Shakespeare Park is a pleasant walk rather than a destination in itself. Lovely if you're based locally, but not worth a special trip from further afield.
