Shading Pond

The water at Shading Pond sits glassy and still most mornings, fringed by trees that lean right down to the edge. It's a proper working landscape - you can tell this isn't just a nature reserve for tourists. But if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Pickmere Leisure is less than five miles away - and you want a proper local spot that doesn't feel manufactured, it's worth the short drive. Bring a flask, sit for a bit, watch the light change. Sometimes that's enough.

Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light and fewest people. It's free to visit, and there's roadside parking nearby though it's never crowded enough to be a problem.
