Sgurr a' Dubh Doire

The walk up Sgurr a' Dubh Doire demands respect. Starting from Kyle, you're looking at a proper Highland climb that rewards effort with views across Kintail and out towards the islands. The peak itself sits at 2,829 metres, part of that dramatic Five Sisters ridge - and unlike some Scottish summits, the ascent feels genuinely earned rather than just a trudge uphill.

This isn't a family stroll. The route takes four to five hours return depending on fitness, with sections that need real scrambling skill and the kind of exposure that makes your stomach tighten. On a clear day - and you'll want to time this for clear weather - the vista stretches from Ben Affric to Loch Duich. Midges are a genuine problem in July and August, so go earlier in the summer or later if you can face the colder conditions.

Serious walkers and peak-baggers will have this pencilled in already. It's the sort of climb that separates casual Highlands tourists from people who actually know Scottish mountains. The terrain is rocky and rough underfoot, with loose scree on the descent that catches plenty of visitors out.

Glenshiel Campsite sits just minutes away, making this a solid option if you're basing yourself there for a week of hill-walking. The nearest proper facilities and supplies are back in Kyle, so plan accordingly. Weather changes fast up here - bring proper kit even if it looks settled in the morning.
