Sgùrr Leac nan Each

The walk up Sgùrr Leac nan Each rewards you with views across Kintail that make the slog worthwhile. It's a proper hill rather than a casual stroll - expect steep sections and rocky terrain, though nothing technical if you're reasonably fit. The summit sits at 982 metres, and on a clear day you can see across to the Five Sisters and down towards Kyle.

This one's for walkers with some experience under their belt. It's not the kind of peak that'll hold the attention of young kids for long, and the descent can be rough on the knees. Allow a good four to five hours from the glen floor. The weather changes fast up here, so check the forecast and bring layers - I've seen it go from sunshine to cloud in minutes.

Kyle is your nearest base, though it's a small place. If you're staying at Glenshiel Campsite just up the road, you're perfectly positioned. The site's well-regarded and the location is spot on for accessing these hills. The walk itself starts from Glen Affric or the Kintail approach depending on which route you fancy - both have their merits, though parking can be tight on summer weekends.

The mountain itself sits within Scotland's hiking heartland, surrounded by proper wilderness. If Sgùrr Leac nan Each feels a bit much, the lower hills around Kintail offer easier alternatives. But if you've got the legs for it, this one delivers genuine Highland scenery without the crowds you'd find on Ben Nevis.
