Sgùrr Fhuaran

The walk up Sgùrr Fhuaran isn't a casual stroll - this is a proper hill and it commands respect. Rising above Kyle in the Southern Highlands, it's one of the Five Sisters peaks, and the views across Loch Duich and towards the Kintail hills are frankly stunning once you've put in the graft.

Most people start from the Glen Shiel car park and tackle it as part of the Five Sisters ridge walk, though Sgùrr Fhuaran stands well on its own. The path switches back and forth up steep scree and rough ground - there's nothing technical about it, but you'll know you've done some climbing when you reach the 981-metre summit. The ridge itself is exposed; if you're not comfortable with height, this bit requires nerve.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a family picnic spot, though older kids with decent boots and stamina might manage it. Allow a solid four to five hours for the round trip if you're taking your time, which you should - the weather can turn quickly up here. Midweek offers fewer crowds than weekends. It's free, obviously, since it's a mountain.

If you're camping nearby at Glenshiel Campsite, this makes an excellent day out from base. Pair it with the broader Kintail hiking circuit in the area and you've got a proper Highland adventure on your hands. Just pack waterproofs and don't underestimate the descent.
