Sgòrr Dhònuill

The walk up Sgòrr Dhònuill is proper steep, and you'll know about it. This 1,027-metre peak sits just above Ballachulish in the Highlands, offering one of those routes where the effort genuinely pays off once you're on the summit.

You're looking at a fairly serious climb - not technical, but relentless. The path switches back on itself repeatedly as it climbs through moorland and scree, and on a damp day the loose stone can be a real nuisance underfoot. Most people allow three to four hours for the round trip, depending on fitness.

What makes it worthwhile is the view. From the top, you get proper expansive vistas across Glencoe and out towards Ben Nevis on a clear day. The Pap of Glencoe sits close by, which is tempting if you've got energy left. Walkers and serious hillwalkers will rate this far more than casual strollers - there's little of interest at the base, and it's entirely about the summit experience.

If you're staying at Invercoe Caravan Park or Red Squirrel Campsite nearby, this makes a solid day's outing. Both are within easy reach of Ballachulish. There's no visitor facility at the summit itself - bring water and weather-appropriate kit. Start early if possible; afternoon weather in the Highlands can turn quickly. It's entirely free to walk, and the only real cost is your own stamina and time.
