Sgòran Dubh Mòr

The walk up Sgòran Dubh Mòr isn't what you'd call a gentle stroll, but that's precisely why it's worth doing. This Cairngorms peak rises sharply above Aviemore, and once you've climbed the 900-odd metres, you're rewarded with views across the entire Spey Valley and beyond - on a clear day you can pick out Ben Nevis in the distance.

The approach is straightforward enough if you're moderately fit: most people allow three to four hours for the round trip, though that depends on your pace and how much time you want to spend faffing about at the summit taking photos. The path itself can be boggy lower down and rocky higher up, so proper boots are essential rather than optional.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. It's serious enough to feel like an achievement without being technically demanding, and the views justify every grunt uphill. Families with older kids - say ten and up, if they're keen hikers - can manage it fine. Younger ones will struggle with the relentless gradient.

There's no charge and no facilities at the summit itself, so bring water and something to eat. Aviemore is only a few miles south, making this an ideal morning or afternoon outing if you're staying in the area. Dalraddy Holiday Park sits about six miles away and works well as a base - you could combine this walk with exploring the broader Cairngorms landscape. Spring through autumn is best; winter requires proper mountain sense.
