Sgorr Bhan

The walk up Sgorr Bhan starts deceptively gentle - you'll find yourself climbing through woodland near Ballachulish, boots crunching on the path as the trees gradually thin out. This is a proper hill rather than a mountain, which means you can bag real views without the full commitment of the bigger peaks around here. The summit sits at about 650 metres, and on a clear day you're looking straight down Loch Leven with the Mamores rising up across the water. Genuinely striking.

It's a there-and-back walk of roughly three to four hours if you're moving at a decent pace. Not punishing, but steep enough in places that you'll feel it in your thighs the next morning. The path is reasonably well-trodden but can be boggy lower down - waterproof boots aren't optional. Families with older kids who've done a bit of walking will manage fine; younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's that sweet spot between a stroll and a serious expedition. History buffs won't find much up there except the views themselves, which is rather the point. The weather matters - head up on a grey day and you're just climbing into cloud. Go on one of those rare Scottish clear days and you'll understand why people put up with the midges.

Since you're near Ballachulish anyway, Invercoe Caravan Park sits just 3 miles away and Red Squirrel Campsite is even closer - both decent bases for tackling Sgorr Bhan and exploring the wider Glencoe area.
