Sgor nam Fiannaidh

The ridge walk up Sgor nam Fiannaidh starts properly steep and doesn't let up much for the first hour. You'll be scrambling over loose scree, hands occasionally needed, and the views back down to Ballachulish get better with every metre gained. Once you're above 600 metres, the wind picks up considerably - this isn't a gentle ramble, it's a real hill.

The summit sits at 967 metres and on a clear day you're looking across Glencoe towards Ben Nevis and out towards the islands. On a cloudy day, you see about fifty metres in any direction, so timing matters. Allow four to five hours for the round trip from the car park at Clachaig, depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

This one's for walkers who want a proper challenge, not families with young kids. The loose ground near the top catches people out - good boots essential, and you'll want a head for heights. It's free to walk, obviously, and open year-round though winter conditions make it much more technical.

If you're based at Red Squirrel Campsite or Invercoe, both just minutes away, this makes a solid day out. Pair it with a walk around Glencoe itself the next day when your legs have recovered. The hill doesn't get rammed like Ben Nevis, which is worth something.
