Sgain Dubh

The walk up Sgain Dubh is properly demanding, but the payoff from Dunoon's backyard is genuine. You're looking at a steep climb through mixed woodland that'll take the best part of two hours if you're not a regular hill-walker, and it's relentless rather than technical. The summit itself sits at just under 2,000 feet, which doesn't sound much until you're huffing your way there, but the views across the Firth of Clyde are exactly why people slog up Scottish hills in the first place. On a clear day the perspective back towards Dunoon and across to the Cowal Peninsula feels earned, not handed to you.

This is a walker's walk, full stop. If you're staying at Beach House Pods six miles away and fancy something more substantial than a stroll, Sgain Dubh fits the bill. Families with teenagers who can handle a proper hike will manage it fine; younger kids or anyone after a gentler outing should look elsewhere. The path is mostly well-defined but muddy sections are common, so decent boots matter. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre, no facilities really - just you, the weather and those views if you're lucky with the timing.

Go early if the forecast looks decent. Weather changes fast on this bit of coast, and starting mid-afternoon when cloud rolls in is asking for trouble. The whole thing is free, naturally, and you can tackle it year-round though winter underfoot conditions get sketchy.
