Serpentine Woods

The woods themselves are the draw here - a proper woodland walk through mixed trees with that lovely damp Cumbrian air and the soft ground underfoot that only a mature nature reserve can offer. Serpentine Woods is the kind of place you stumble into half by accident and end up spending longer than you planned, following the paths as they wind through the trees without any particular destination in mind.

It's best suited to walkers and anyone who genuinely enjoys being among trees rather than viewing them as a backdrop. Kids will manage if they're the type who like exploring and spotting wildlife, but there's nothing here to occupy them if they need constant stimulation - no play equipment, no visitor centre, no cafe. Just woodland.

You're looking at anything from 45 minutes for a gentle loop to two hours if you explore properly. The reserve sits handily close to Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site - barely a mile and a half away - making it an easy add-on to a Lake District park holiday without needing to drive up into the mountains. If you're based at Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site or any of the glamping spots scattered around the area, you could incorporate this as a quieter morning outing before heading to the bigger attractions.

Bring decent boots. The paths can be boggy, particularly after rain, and that's half the charm really. There's something restorative about a woodland walk that doesn't require booking, paying, or queuing. Just turn up and walk.
