Selside Hall

The ruins of Selside Hall sit quietly in the Cumbrian fell country, a modest reminder of Tudor life in the Lake District. It's not much to look at nowadays - essentially a sturdy stone shell from the 16th century, stripped back to its bones - but that's rather the point. This is archaeology without the visitor centre fanfare.

You're looking at what amounts to a fortified farmhouse, the kind of dwelling that serious upland farmers needed when winters were brutal and the border with Scotland felt properly close. The walls still stand chest-high in places, and you can pick out where rooms once divided the interior space. What strikes you most is how austere it all is - no grand windows, no decorative flourishes, just thick walls and the raw landscape pressing in from every direction.

It's free to visit and requires no booking. The walk to reach it from the nearest access point (about three-quarters of an hour on foot if you approach via the fell paths) means you won't be jostling with crowds. This is genuinely somewhere to come if you're interested in how people actually lived centuries ago, not just looking for a quick photo stop.

Historically minded walkers will get the most from it. The surrounding moorland offers proper fell walking, and it sits well within a broader exploring loop if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site is just 2.7 miles away, or Two Acre Glamping Pods if you want something a touch more comfortable. Allow half a day if you're making a proper expedition of it.
