Sedgewell Cove

The walk down to Sedgewell Cove from near Kingsbridge takes you through proper Devon countryside - all rolling fields and hedgerows - before suddenly opening up to a small, sheltered beach tucked between high cliffs. It's the sort of cove that feels forgotten, which is precisely why you'd want to come here. The beach itself is modest in size, pebbled mostly, with good rock formations at either end that are worth exploring if the tide's right. On a clear day the views across the coast are solid.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a trek for what is essentially a quiet swimming spot, though the walk itself is pleasant enough and not especially arduous. Walkers will get more from it - it's a natural stop on a longer coastal route and the cliffs either side offer decent photo opportunities. The real appeal is the tranquility. You won't find crowds here, even in summer.

It's free to access, though parking nearby requires a bit of local knowledge or a short walk from Kingsbridge town itself. Allow a couple of hours if you're including the walk and a proper look around. The best time is middle of the day when the sun's higher and the shadows less dramatic on the cliff face.

If you're based at South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm or Karrageen Caravan & Camping Park, both within spitting distance, Sedgewell makes an easy half-day excursion. Hidden Hill's glamping guests could easily reach it too. It works well paired with exploring Kingsbridge's own waterfront rather than as a destination on its own.
