Seaton Cliffs Nature Reserve

The cliffs here rise dramatically from the Aberdeenshire coast just south of Arbroath, and frankly, they're worth the drive if you're anywhere in the region. You're looking at sheer sandstone faces dropping straight into the North Sea - the kind of place that makes you understand why people used to fear the ocean. The reserve itself is relatively small, but that's rather the point. It's not some massive visitor attraction with cafes and gift shops; it's a proper working nature reserve where you actually see things because the infrastructure stays out of the way. Seabirds dominate - guillemots, razorbills, and if you're lucky in summer, the odd puffin. The walking is straightforward enough, following a coastal path with the cliffs as your constant companion. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do it properly rather than just snap photos and leave. Spring and early summer are when it really comes alive with breeding birds. The wind can be absolutely brutal even on what looks like a calm day, so dress accordingly. It works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a wider Aberdeenshire trip. The Grange Glamping is only a few miles inland if you're basing yourself in the area - the contrast between manicured farmland and these raw cliffs is actually rather nice. The reserve costs nothing to access, which is refreshing. Go early if you want any chance of parking space during busy periods.
