Seaforde Gardens

The walled garden at Seaforde sits behind a proper Victorian mansion a few miles from Newcastle, and it's the sort of place that rewards a slow afternoon rather than a quick tick-off. You're looking at fifteen acres of immaculately kept grounds - formal lawns, a maze that's genuinely tricky (kids will spend a good hour here), and specimen trees that make you realise how old this place actually is.

The real draw is the tropical house. Yes, in Northern Ireland. It's warm, humid, packed with plants you'd expect to see somewhere warmer, and genuinely unexpected. There's also a deli on site that does proper food - not just a carpark cafe situation.

Walkers will find the grounds walkable enough, though it's more "dressed up stroll" than serious rambling. History types will appreciate the estate's bones, though the house itself isn't open to the public. Families get the maze, the peacocks roaming about, and space to let kids burn off energy without feeling rushed.

Best visited spring through autumn when everything's in growth. Allow two to three hours minimum if you're actually looking around rather than just passing through. It's worth combining with a night at Funny Farm Adventures or Slieve Croob Camping nearby - both excellent, and you'll want to be in the area for the Mourne Mountains anyway.
