National Trust - Murlough National Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself on a vast expanse of sand dunes the moment you arrive at Murlough - three miles of them, running down to a proper golden beach that stretches along the coast near Newcastle. The National Trust manages this place, and they've done right by it. The reserve covers over 600 acres of dunes, salt marsh, and shingle beach, all of it teeming with things most people don't expect to find in Northern Ireland.

It's the wildlife that makes the trip worthwhile. Grey seals haul out on the beach during winter months, and bird watchers come here year-round for everything from little terns to winter visitors. The dune system itself is genuinely interesting - you can see how the landscape shifts as you walk further inland, with marram grass giving way to scrubland and eventually to grassy plateaus. Allow a couple of hours minimum, though most folk end up staying longer.

Families with younger kids might find the walk across the dunes a bit arduous in places, but older children and teenagers will enjoy the freedom to explore. Walkers get real value here - the terrain changes enough to keep things interesting, and there are proper trails marked out. History buffs will appreciate that this is an active archaeological site with Bronze Age and medieval remains scattered across the dunes.

Access is free, and the nearest village of Newcastle sits just a short drive away. The caravan parks clustered nearby - Mourneview, Murlough Cottage, Windsor - make this an ideal spot to base yourselves if you're exploring the Mourne Mountains region. Go in late spring or early autumn when the dunes aren't rammed with summer visitors.
