The car park at Dundrum Inner Bay doubles as a proper nature reserve, which is a bit of an odd setup but works surprisingly well. You're looking at coastal mudflats and salt marshes that attract waders and wildfowl - the kind of place where binoculars actually earn their keep. The play park tucked alongside means families aren't entirely abandoning the kids to birdwatching misery, though realistically this is more for the ornithologists and quiet types than screaming toddlers.

Spring and autumn migrations are when it's worth the drive from Newcastle. Winter brings different species, summer is quieter but pleasantly so. The whole thing is free, which helps justify what is essentially a car park experience. Allow an hour if you're serious about spotting things, half that if you're just checking it off.

For a caravan holiday in the area, this fits nicely between proper days out. Mourneview and Murlough Cottage are barely over a mile away, so it's a five-minute jaunt to stretch your legs and do some birding without committing to a full expedition. If you're based at Camping Tollymore or Woodcroft further out, the Mourne Mountains themselves offer far more dramatic walking, but Dundrum is useful for a quieter morning when the weather's not cooperating. It's the sort of place that rewards patience more than effort - ideal if you want to sit in the car with a flask and actually see something rather than trudging around for views.
