The moment you step inside Seaforde Butterfly House, the temperature hits you - warm, humid, nothing like the Northern Irish weather outside. Hundreds of butterflies drift through the air in what feels like a proper tropical greenhouse, a surreal pocket of warmth near Newcastle.

It's a straightforward affair: a controlled environment where you walk through viewing areas watching species from across the globe. Painted Ladies, Swallowtails, Morphos - they land on plants, on the walls, occasionally on you. Kids absolutely love it, especially younger ones who get genuinely mesmerised by watching them feed on fruit stations. Adults tend to stay longer than expected, phone cameras out, trying to catch that perfect wing-spread shot.

The pace is your own - some people rush through in 20 minutes, others linger for an hour. There's something meditative about it, actually. No noise, no crowds in the way you'd get at bigger attractions, just the soft flutter of wings and the smell of damp earth and flowers.

It works well as part of a wider Mourne Mountains trip from Newcastle. The caravan parks round here - Murlough, Mourneview, Woodcroft - are all within easy reach, and the Butterfly House makes a decent rainy-day stop or a gentle morning visit before heading out for a walk. You won't need more than an hour here, so slot it in before tackling Slieve Donard or exploring the coast.
