Seafield Recreation Ground

The wetland habitat at Seafield Recreation Ground catches you off guard - you're expecting a standard playing field, but instead there's proper marsh and grassland that actually matters for wildlife. It's a working nature reserve, which means the scruffy bits you might walk past elsewhere are exactly what makes this place valuable.

The reserve sits just outside Kinghorn, close enough for a morning visit without planning a full day around it. You get decent walking through varied terrain - some open grass, stretches along the water's edge, patches of scrub. Birdwatchers will find plenty to occupy themselves, especially if you time it right for migration seasons. It's the kind of place where you spot things rather than admire a single focal point.

Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment do well here. Bring binoculars and a bird guide, and you've got an hour sorted. Younger children might get restless unless they're the type who enjoy pottering about turning over logs and hunting for insects.

If you're staying at Drummohr Camping & Glamping Site five miles away, this works as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's free access, no visitor centre nonsense, just an actual bit of Scottish landscape doing what it's meant to do. Worth the detour if you're in East Lothian, but don't expect manicured paths or benches every fifty metres. It's rougher than that, and better for it.
