Sculpturistic - Matt Cummings, Sculptor and Artist

Matt Cummings has set up his sculpture studio just outside Totnes, and it's one of those stops you stumble upon rather than plan for. The work on display ranges from abstract pieces to figurative forms - all carved or cast by hand - and there's something satisfying about seeing art made by someone who's actually in the room with you. You can watch him work if you're lucky, or just wander around the studio space and get a proper sense of his process. It's intimate in a way galleries never quite manage. The best part is that there's no pretension. Cummings isn't interested in gatekeeping; he'll talk you through what he's made and why, which beats a lot of the art world's nonsense. This works brilliantly as a half-hour detour if you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Ramslade or Whitehill are only a few miles away - though you could easily spend longer if you're genuinely interested in sculpture. Free admission as far as I can tell, though it's worth checking opening times before you drive out. Families with younger kids might find it a bit slow unless they're already art-minded, but anyone who appreciates craft and doesn't mind a small, quiet space should make the effort. It's the kind of place that reminds you why independent artists matter.
