Scrubs Wood

Walking into Scrubs Wood is like stepping into the kind of forest that feels properly wild, even though you're only a few miles from Battle. The woodland is dense and atmospheric - towering trees, decent undergrowth, the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong rather than traffic. It's a genuine working forest rather than a manicured country park, which means it's got character.

You can wander the paths for anything from twenty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how deep you want to go. There's no entrance fee or obvious facilities, just open access woodland - the way forests should be. It's excellent for walkers and anyone wanting to escape without driving far from town. Kids will enjoy it if they're the type to hunt for creatures and climb fallen logs; toddlers might find the uneven terrain a bit of a slog.

Timing matters here. Early morning in spring is when you'll see the most wildlife. Summer gets muggy and buggy. Winter reveals the wood's structure once the leaves drop. The paths can get waterlogged after rain, so proper footwear is essential.

If you're based at Beech Estate Campsite just down the road, this makes a perfect half-day excursion before heading back for lunch. It pairs well with visiting Battle itself - there's enough here to justify the walk, but not so much that you need a whole day. Honest woodland, no pretence.
