Scottish Wildlife Trust, Montrose Basin Visitor Centre and Wildlife Reserve

The visitor centre at Montrose Basin sits right on the water's edge, and the first thing you notice is the sheer volume of birds. Thousands of them - waders, geese, ducks - moving across mudflats that stretch out like a giant grey carpet twice a day with the tide. It's genuinely dramatic stuff, the kind of place where you understand why birdwatchers get obsessed.

Inside, the centre itself is fairly modest - displays about the basin's ecology, some interactive bits for younger visitors, and crucially, a cafe with decent views. The real draw is the hide system. There are several scattered around the reserve, and on a clear day you can spend hours just watching. Bring binoculars. Seriously, don't forget them.

This is absolutely a spot for walkers and nature enthusiasts. Families with patient kids will get something out of it too, though you need to manage expectations - it's not a zoo, birds don't perform on demand, and sometimes the weather makes the walk between hides properly grim. Spring and autumn migrations are peak times; you'll see far more activity than in summer.

Arbroath is the nearest proper town, about 7 miles south, so you could easily combine this with a coastal walk or fish and chips lunch. Worth allowing two to three hours minimum, longer if you're serious about the birdwatching.
