Scheregate

Scheregate sits on the eastern edge of Colchester, a modest but genuinely interesting slice of medieval Essex that most visitors simply drive past. What you're looking at is a rare survivor - the remains of a water gate that once controlled access to the River Blackwater, built around the 13th century when Colchester was far more important as a port than it is today.

It's not a dramatic ruin. The stonework is weathered, partly submerged depending on tide and season, and you won't find facilities or interpretation panels. What makes it worthwhile is the quiet realisation that you're standing at what was once a proper checkpoint - goods coming upriver would have passed through here, tolls collected, access controlled. For history types and anyone interested in medieval trade routes, that context transforms a pile of old stone into something rather compelling.

Allow 20 minutes unless you're genuinely into fortifications and river engineering, in which case you'll want longer to sit with it. Best visited at low tide when you can actually see the structure properly. There's no charge and no announced opening hours - it's accessible year-round.
