Scampston Hall & Walled Garden

The walled garden at Scampston Hall is the real draw here - a proper design-led space that feels nothing like your typical stately home afterthought. Designed by Piet Oudolf, the Dutch garden architect, it's split into different rooms with distinct characters: formal areas with clipped hedges, then looser plantings that shift through the seasons. I visited in late spring and the perennials were just getting going, which is exactly when you'd want to see it.

The hall itself is worth a look if you've got the time, though the garden is genuinely the star turn. You're not walking round endless corridors here - it's compact enough that even restless kids won't lose the plot after an hour. The planting is clever rather than showy, and unless you're really into horticulture, it reads better in person than in any photo.

There's a decent café in the courtyard, which helps if you're making an afternoon of it. From Pickering, it's a straightforward drive - maybe fifteen minutes or so - which makes it an easy add-on to exploring the North York Moors. If you're based at Vale of Pickering Caravan Park or one of the glamping spots like Wolds Walk or Lahtle Wood, you're within striking distance for a morning visit without it feeling like a proper expedition.

Worth your time if you actually care about gardens. If you're just ticking off stately homes, skip it.
