Scammonden Water

You'll find Scammonden Water wedged between the Pennine hills just north of Elland, a proper working reservoir that somehow manages to feel more like a natural lake than a piece of infrastructure. The water's the real draw here - it's a decent size, surrounded by moorland that shifts colour with the seasons, and there's a decent walk around the perimeter if you're after stretching your legs without committing to a fell-top trek.

The access points are straightforward enough, and you can park up without faffing about. It's not going to blow your mind with facilities - this isn't a tourist destination with a visitor centre and overpriced tea - but that's partly why it works. Walkers get the most from it, especially those based at Elland Hall Farm Caravan Park or Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby. The walk takes a couple of hours depending on which route you fancy, and it's flat enough that families with younger kids can manage sections of it without complaints.

Bird watchers will actually find it worth the visit - the reservoir attracts a decent variety, particularly in winter. The fishing is a thing too if you're into that. Best visited on a clear day when the Pennine views actually matter; thick cloud makes it feel a bit bleak and samey.

It's free to access and there's no time limit, so you can linger as long as you want. Fits nicely into a park holiday as a half-day venture rather than a destination in itself.
