Sawley Park

The Trent cuts through a proper slice of Nottinghamshire countryside here, and Sawley Park sits right on its banks like it's been waiting for you to stumble across it. What you're looking at is a nature reserve that feels genuinely wild without requiring a three-hour trek - the kind of place where you can actually spot something interesting within twenty minutes of arriving.

The reserve centres on meadows and woodland that border the river, which means you get that mix of habitats that draws in birds and insects. Bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. The walking isn't demanding, though paths can get muddy after rain, so proper boots make a difference. Spring's when it's most worth your while - the wildflowers come through and the birdwatching gets properly busy.

It's the sort of stop that works brilliantly alongside a holiday at Midshires Way Campsite just down the road. You're only five or six miles from Nottingham, so this isn't a day-trip destination from somewhere distant - it's more for filling a morning or afternoon when you're already in the area. Families with kids who'll actually look at nature rather than demand theme parks will get something out of it. Walkers heading along the Trent Trail can build it into a longer route easily enough.

One thing to flag: it's not a managed visitor attraction with cafes or facilities, so come prepared. Free to access, naturally, and you can spend as little or as long as you fancy.
