Savile Park Moor

The moor rises above Elland with the kind of raw, wind-scoured beauty that makes you understand why people move to Yorkshire and never leave. Savile Park Moor is proper moorland - heather, rough grass, and the sort of views that stretch all the way across the Pennines when the weather isn't being difficult about it.

This is a nature reserve, which means it's been left largely to its own devices. You won't find manicured paths or visitor centres here. What you get instead is access to genuine upland habitat, the kind of place where you might spot red grouse, curlew, or if you're lucky, a hen harrier quartering the slopes. Walkers absolutely should be here - the moorland walks are straightforward and genuinely rewarding, particularly in late summer when the heather blooms purple across everything.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day trip or a morning outing while basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks. Elland Hall Farm, just under two miles away, is the closest option and rated excellently. You could also stay at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite for a slightly longer drive but better facilities.

Families with younger children might find it a bit exposed and windswept for extended visits - there's no shelter to speak of. But teenagers and proper walkers will find it genuinely worth the trip. The lack of facilities is actually the point here. Go when the weather's set fair, take a flask, and spend a couple of hours up on the moor. It's honest, unadorned, and exactly what moorland should be.
