Savernake Park

Ancient woodland stretches for miles through Savernake, one of England's oldest forests and a proper sanctuary if you're after serious greenery without the crowds. The reserve sits just outside Botswicky Copse in Wiltshire, and it's the kind of place where you can disappear for hours without seeing another soul.

Walking here feels different from your standard country park. The trees are genuinely old - some of them have been here for centuries - and the canopy creates this cathedral-like atmosphere that's hard to find anywhere else. There's a network of paths threading through, ranging from gentle strolls along the main rides to more serious woodland rambles if you've got the legs for it. Cyclists use it too, so keep an eye out.

Bring binoculars. The wildlife is brilliant - deer pop up regularly, and if you're quiet, you'll spot birds you don't normally see in gardens. It's brilliant for families who can walk at least an hour without complaining, though toddlers might find the distances tricky. History buffs will appreciate the fact this woodland has stood here since Norman times, though there's not much in the way of visible monuments - it's about the forest itself rather than structures.

The real win is pairing a visit here with Nordic Glamping at Botswicky just down the road - five miles or so. That gives you proper accommodation with immediate access to walking routes that'll tire everyone out properly. Allow at least two hours to get anything meaningful from the place. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so come prepared.
