Savage Wood

Walking into Savage Wood near Maidstone is like stepping into proper Kent countryside - the kind where you forget the town is only a few miles behind you. It's a decent-sized forest with a network of paths that wind through mature trees, and the floor is soft underfoot most of the year, which means it's manageable even after rain. The woodland feels genuinely quiet, the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong rather than traffic.

It's ideal for families after a couple of hours of easy walking without needing to plan a full-day expedition, and for dog owners it's excellent - plenty of space to let them loose and proper trail variety. Serious hikers might find it a bit straightforward, but it's the kind of spot you pop back to because there's something calming about it.

There are no visitor facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. The wood is free to access, and you can turn up whenever suits you - early morning is genuinely lovely if you can manage it. If you're staying at Chegworth Mill Glamping or one of the nearby sites like Oak View or the Bearsted Caravan Club base, Savage Wood makes a perfect morning activity before heading back for lunch. It's close enough not to eat into your day, far enough to feel like an actual outing rather than a quick stroll round the caravan park.
