Sandyrigs Wood

You'll find Sandyrigs Wood just outside Leven, a proper woodland walk that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. It's the sort of place locals know well and tourists often miss, which is fine by anyone's measure. The trees are decent - enough cover to feel like you've actually escaped - and the paths wind through without being too taxing, making it good for families who don't fancy a five-hour trudge.

The wood itself is straightforward: mixed woodland with enough character to keep you interested for an hour or so. Walking through, you get that quiet that only trees can give you, and in autumn the light through the canopy is proper lovely. It's not dramatic or rare, but it's exactly what a forest walk should be.

This works well as part of a wider Fife break. Leven itself is on the coast, so you could pair a morning here with an afternoon on the beach or exploring the nearby towns. St Monans Holiday Park sits just down the road at 1.5 miles, and Elie Holiday Park a couple of miles further on - either makes a solid base if you're planning a few days in the area. The walking isn't strenuous enough to exhaust young kids before an evening, and there's enough greenery to let them burn off energy without you having to supervise too closely.

Head over when the weather's decent - wet ground makes it a bit of a slog - and allow an hour minimum. It's free, accessible, and honest woodland. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
