Sandy Bottoms

Sandy Bottoms is one of those Lakeland spots that doesn't shout about itself, which is rather the point. It's a proper stretch of sandy shoreline tucked into the landscape near Kendal, the kind of place locals know about but visitors often walk straight past looking for something more obviously 'scenic'. What you get here is genuine - a natural beach with actual sand, which is rarer around these parts than you'd think, backed by low cliffs and decent views across the water.

It works best for families with younger kids and casual walkers rather than serious hikers. There's something about the flatness of it that makes a change from the steep fells everywhere else. You can potter about for an hour or so, skip stones, have a paddle if the weather's kind. Dogs do well here too. The nearest proper base is Kendal itself, just under a mile away via Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site, or you could park up closer to Windermere at one of the sites further out - The Ashes or Lakeland Glamping both reasonable options if you're doing a wider Lakes loop.

Timing-wise, go earlier in the day before the car parks get rammed. There's no real infrastructure to speak of - no café, no facilities - so bring what you need. It's free, obviously, and you can get round it properly in an hour or two without feeling rushed. Not a headline act, but a genuine bit of lakeside Britain that rewards a short detour.
