Sands Plantation

Sands Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Pickering, the sort of place that rewards a morning's ramble without demanding a full day commitment. You're walking through mature forest - mostly conifers mixed with hardwoods - on decent trails that don't require map-reading skills or fell-walker legs. The whole thing takes a couple of hours if you're not dawdling, less if you've got restless kids in tow.

It's genuinely good for families. The terrain is manageable, there's enough shade on hot days, and you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky and quiet. Walkers will appreciate the network of paths that thread through different sections of the plantation - you can make a circuit or bail out early depending on how you're feeling that day.

Historically it's interesting too: this is working forestry land with real purpose, not just a ornamental park. That changes how you walk through it somehow - there's a sense you're seeing land that's actually managed for timber.

If you're basing yourself at Vale of Pickering Caravan Park or one of the glamping spots nearby like Lahtle Wood, this is an easy detour. Pop down for a couple of hours between other Yorkshire attractions. No entrance fee that we can find, which is always welcome. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want to avoid the school groups. Winter's actually lovely here - the light comes differently through bare branches.
