Sandford Avenue Recreation Park

This small nature reserve sits just outside Church Stretton, one of Shropshire's most walkable market towns, and it's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning rather than a rushed afternoon visit. Sandford Avenue Recreation Park is genuinely modest - think woodland paths, grassland, and the kind of local wildlife you won't photograph for Instagram. But that's rather the point. It's free to wander, takes maybe an hour if you're in no rush, and works beautifully as a break between bigger walks across the Long Mynd or Caer Caradoc if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Small Batch or Mountain Edge.

The park itself is best for anyone who enjoys a proper woodland stroll without the elevation gain. Families with younger kids won't get bored here - there's space to move about, things to spot if you know what to look for, and it's safe enough for children to explore at their own pace. Birdwatchers and botany types will find genuine interest in the habitat, especially in spring and early summer. The reserve isn't a destination in itself; it's a piece of the Church Stretton puzzle, useful for breaking up a holiday week if you're based at Brook House Farm or one of the other local camping spots.
