The Flash at Sandbach is one of those proper Cheshire wetlands that sneaks up on you - a Site of Special Scientific Interest that most people driving through to Crewe wouldn't give a second glance. But if you're camping nearby at Oakwood or Yellowstone, it's absolutely worth an hour's exploration.

What you're looking at is a glacial melt-water lake surrounded by reed beds and marshy ground, the sort of place that comes alive for birdwatchers and ecology types. Great crested grebes, tufted ducks, and if you're lucky, water voles if you tread carefully. The walking is gentle - no steep climbs, just flat paths that loop around the water's edge. The light in late afternoon is genuinely lovely, reflecting off the water and turning everything golden.

It's not a destination that'll keep restless kids entertained for hours, but families wanting a quiet nature walk will find it peaceful. Winter brings migrating birds and a more dramatic landscape. Summer crowds it out with anglers and dog walkers, which rather defeats the purpose.

There's no charge that I'm aware of - it's open access - though you won't find facilities or a visitor centre. Bring binoculars and patience. Pair it with one of the caravan parks within five miles, and you've got a proper low-key Cheshire break that actually feels away from it all, despite being minutes from Crewe.
