Boundary Wood

Dense canopy stretches for miles around this proper Cheshire woodland, just outside Crewe. The paths wind through mature oak and beech trees that have been growing here for decades, creating that cathedral-like atmosphere you get in old English forests.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty to explore - the main trail takes about an hour at a gentle pace, though you could easily spend half a day if the little ones are keen on stick collecting and den building. Dog walkers absolutely love it here; the woodland floor stays reasonably dry even after rain thanks to all that leaf cover.

Bring wellies in winter - the paths can get properly muddy, especially near the stream that runs through the eastern section. Spring's the real treat though, when bluebells carpet the forest floor and everything feels fresh again.

The wood sits perfectly for a day out from any of the nearby holiday parks around Crewe. Thornley Leisure and Lakeside Caravan Park are both within two miles, making it an easy morning walk before lunch back at base. It's free to wander, no gates or entry fees, just park up on the road verge and head in.

Not the most dramatic countryside in Cheshire, but a solid choice for burning off energy and getting some proper fresh air into your lungs.
