Salthouse Heath

The heath spreads out flat and open just east of Holt, a proper Norfolk landscape where the sky dominates everything else. Walking here feels different from the usual park stroll - there's heather and gorse, rough grass, and the kind of wide-open quiet that you don't get many places these days. It's managed for wildlife and conservation, so you're looking at genuine habitat rather than manicured lawns. The paths are straightforward, making it accessible without being boring, and there's a real sense of space that works well for families wanting kids to burn some energy or anyone just wanting to think.

In terms of time, a couple of hours covers it comfortably. You're not fighting crowds here - this is local knowledge rather than coach-trip territory. Summer is lovely for the heather flowering, but frankly any season works if you don't mind the weather. The nearest town of Holt is close enough for lunch or supplies, which helps.

If you're staying at Kelling Heath or Woodlands nearby, this becomes a natural extension of a Norfolk break without the faff of driving far. It won't be the most dramatic day out - there's no visitor centre, no facilities as such - but that's partly the point. It's the kind of place that grows on you, especially if you're into the quieter side of East Anglia. Walkers and nature types will get more from it than people expecting manicured attractions.
