Salterforth Park

The path drops down through mixed woodland and you're suddenly in open moorland with proper views across the Pennines. That's Salterforth Park - a nature reserve that sits just outside Skipton and feels a world away from the market town's cobbled streets.

It's essentially moorland and grassland with birch and heather, threading through what's clearly limestone country. The walking here is straightforward without being boring. You'll spot curlews if you time it right, and the light in late afternoon catches the valley sides in a way that makes the camera work easy. A couple of hours is enough to cover the main routes without feeling rushed.

Walkers get the most from this place. The terrain isn't steep but it's uneven enough to keep you concentrating, and the lack of crowds - even in summer - means you can actually hear the birds. Families with older kids will manage fine. Toddlers might struggle on the rougher bits.

If you're based at Hedgerow Luxury Glamping just down the road, this is an obvious half-day venture. The reserve doesn't have the visitor infrastructure of bigger spots - no café, no facilities that I could see - so bring what you need. Free to access, no gates or ticket offices. Best visited when it's not been raining for a week; the ground gets boggy fast.

Worth the detour if you're exploring the area beyond Skipton. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a walking holiday.
