Salisbury Wood

Walking into Salisbury Wood near Maidstone, you're immediately swallowed by a proper working forest - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think. It's not a manicured park with interpretive boards and colour-coded trails. This is the real thing: dense woodland, dappled light filtering through broadleaf canopy, and the smell of damp earth and decomposing leaves.

The forest works well for serious walkers rather than casual strollers. There are paths threading through, but they're not exactly signposted to death - which is either brilliant or frustrating depending on your tolerance for a bit of navigation. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. Families with younger kids might find it a touch heavy-going if they're expecting a quick amble, but older children who don't mind getting properly lost in the trees will have a field day. A couple of hours is realistic, unless you're determined to cover every inch.

What strikes you most is how quiet it is. No café, no facilities, no crowds - just woodland as it should be. Free access and no entrance fees means you can pop in without commitment. Spring brings bluebells that paint the forest floor; autumn turns it into a cathedral of gold and copper.

Stay at Chegworth Mill Glamping just 1.7 miles away for a proper woodland escape, or base yourself at Oak View Holiday Park for easier access to both the forest and Maidstone town centre. Bearsted's caravan site is another solid option nearby.
