Saint Peter's Church

The church sits quietly on a rise above Ruthin, a solid stone statement of Welsh faith that's been standing since medieval times. Saint Peter's doesn't shout about itself - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no car park with seventeen coaches. You just walk in.

Inside, it's that particular cold that only old churches manage, the sort of chill that makes you understand why people lit candles. The medieval stonework is genuine, worn smooth by centuries of hands and knees. There's stained glass that catches the light properly, and the kind of peaceful quiet that's become rarer than it should be.

It's worth an hour if you're in Ruthin anyway, less if you're just passing through. History types will spend longer examining the details - the font, the window tracery, the monuments. Kids will get restless after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely interested in old buildings. The walk up from the town centre is pleasant enough, though it does have a proper hill to it.

Ruthin itself is a solid market town with enough going on - decent pubs, independent shops, that sort of thing. If you're camping or glamping at Clwydian, which is only a few miles away, this makes an easy morning jaunt before heading out to walk the Clwydian Range or explore the wider Denbighshire countryside. Entry appears to be free, though do check ahead as opening times can be variable.
