Saint Peter, Broughton Poggs

The Church of Saint Peter sits in the tiny village of Broughton Poggs, about three miles north of Burford, and it's one of those places that rewards the small detour. The stone building itself is modest - 13th century at its core with later additions - but step inside and you'll find proper medieval wall paintings, which is genuinely rare in Oxfordshire churches. The chancel still has traces of Saints Catherine and Margaret, faded but unmistakably there, painted when the church was built and only rediscovered under Victorian plaster in the 1980s.

It's a quiet spot, the kind where you might have the place entirely to yourself on a weekday afternoon. History buffs will spend a good half hour picking out architectural details and squinting at the murals. Children less so - it's small, there's nothing interactive, and once you've spotted the paintings there isn't much left to do. Access appears straightforward - the building looks kept open during reasonable hours, though it's wise to phone ahead if you're making a special trip. Free entry, naturally. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour unless you're really into medieval art, in which case bring a torch and settle in for longer. Pair it with a stroll around Burford itself, which sits just down the road and has considerably more going on.
