Willow Meadow

The wetland walk at Willow Meadow is a proper tonic if you've spent too long wandering Burford's high street. This nature reserve spreads across marshy ground where the willows actually justify their name - great skeletal things in winter, properly lush come spring. You're looking at a modest patch of Oxfordshire countryside, the sort of place that rewards binoculars more than it rewards speed. Birdwatchers will have a field day here. Kingfishers dart about if you time it right, and the reed beds attract everything from warblers to the occasional heron. The paths are mostly flat and well-maintained, so families with younger legs won't struggle, though it's genuinely best in early morning when the light sits low and the birds are actually about rather than hiding. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stand and stare. It's free to access, which is the only thing that makes sense about a place this quiet. The nearest campsite is Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club, barely two miles away - perfect if you're basing yourself in that corner of the Cotswolds and want somewhere low-key that doesn't require proper hiking boots. Don't expect drama. Don't expect café facilities. What you get is actual peace, which in the Cotswolds feels increasingly rare.
