Saint Michael's

The church sits in the village of Sutton, a few miles east of Norwich, and it's one of those Norfolk buildings that rewards a proper wander round. Saint Michael's is a solid medieval affair with a tower that's been watching over the marshes for centuries, and the interior - all timber roof and worn stone - has that genuine quietness you only get in places that have been doing the same job for 700 years. The pews creak, the light comes through old glass, and there's usually not another soul about.

It's less "attraction" in the tourist sense and more a place to understand what village life actually meant in Norfolk. The churchyard is worth fifteen minutes alone if you like old gravestones and the kind of overgrown corners that hint at history. Kids will find it dull unless they're the type who likes exploring, but walkers covering the Broads area should absolutely stop in.

There's no admission charge - it's a working parish church - though opening hours aren't fixed. Ring ahead or check the Stalham Benefice website before you drive out. From any of the local caravan parks - Hickling Campsite is barely two miles away - it's an easy cycle or a short drive followed by a walk through the village. Pair it with a proper Broads exploration rather than treating it as a standalone thing. Twenty minutes here, max, but it's the kind of twenty minutes that makes sense of the landscape around you.
