Catfield Dyke

A shallow expanse of water east of Norwich, Catfield Dyke is one of those Norfolk Broads locations that rewards the patient observer more than the casual passer-through. It's not dramatic - no towering cliffs or waterfall theatrics here - but the water itself is remarkably clear and fringed with reed beds that attract serious birdwatchers year-round. Marsh harriers, bitterns, and the occasional swallowtail butterfly make appearances if you're quiet enough.

The dyke sits within easy reach of Hickling Campsite, just half a mile away, which makes it a natural addition to a Broads holiday without requiring much effort. It's the sort of place walkers and nature enthusiasts will genuinely enjoy, while families with restless young children might find it a bit slow. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - this is proper Broads country, which means peaceful but also fairly bare-bones.

Best visited in spring or early summer when bird activity peaks and you're less likely to encounter midges. Allow an hour or so if you're stopping by, though serious birdwatchers routinely spend half a day here. It's free to access and genuinely worth the detour if you're staying at any of the local holiday parks - Clippesby Hall and Willowcroft are both within a few miles and offer proper bases for exploring the wider Broads network. Pair it with a paddle on the main waterways if you want something a bit more active, but don't skip this quieter spot if wildlife is your thing.
